I remember Donna very well. She was a very nice and smart young lady and a friend from school days. I hope she had a wonderful life and family. I don't know much of what happened to her after High School, but I know it had to be a success as she was so intellegent and if I remember right, she was headed for a degree in math. God Bless her and her Family.

My understanding is that Donna made her transition over the Thanksgiving holiday of 1970.  From what I heard, she was riding on the open tailgate of a station wagon on an unpaved road, fell off, and suffered a terminal head injury.

Thank you Charles for sharing that. I am so sorry to hear she died so young. She will be fondly remembered.

I knew Donna very well.  She was a sweet, bright and talented young lady.  She lived next door to my Aunt who taught piano lessons.  Donna and I both took lessons from Mrs. Thompson (my Aunt)  Yes, the story is true, while on a week-end trip Donna was riding on a station wagon tailgate and when a bump was hit it bounced her off and she landed directly on the back of her head.  She passed over the Thanksgiving holiday of 1970.  She has been missed.

While in the fifth and sixth grades at Stevens Elementary, we all had paper drives every Friday in order to earn money for the school to air condition the cafeteria/auditorium, the principal's (Miss Margaret McConnell) office, the other administrative offices, Nurse's office.  We had a Penguin Contest during that time in our class.  For every 100 pounds of papers we brought in, we got an "ice cube" put on the chart by our name.   Donna somehow obtained so many papers.  She would never tell us how she did it.  She promised that she didn't know anybody that worked at any paper in town.  It was always a mystery.  Her name had so many ice cubes by her penguin, it was just ridiculous.  The other year we were together, we each received a little green pin that said "I brought one" and had a little white ribbon attached to it with "100" on it.  At least that's what mine said.  Hers probably said two tons.  I'm exaggerating, but all of us were SO jealous off her and envious of her "secret" source.  I always imagined her greatness would take her far, like a rocket scientist or something.

We did air condition all those rooms at Stevens.  They were installed during the summer after our last year at Stevens.

(We did the same thing for Black Jr. High, and Waltrip Sr. High.   Each school installed the A/C the summer after our graduation from that school!!   What a wonderful class we were!)

Donna was a very sweet person who was quiet and reserved, but she more than tolerated talkative people like me. I remember her taking so many books home, even over the weekend. She deserved to be our Valedictorion. I always loved her as a friend, and think of her and her tragic passing a lot through the years.
