Sam will always be a fond memory for me. He was like a brother from another mother. I named my youngest child Samantha, to honor his memory. I know he was loved by many and was an awesome person. He had a heart of gold.

He left this world Feb. 3, 1971.

Sammy was a childhood friend where our families knew each other and did things together. We always matched each other playing little league football and football there at Waltrip. He had a kind heart who was there for me when I needed him growing up. Even though he has been gone all these years I still remember and think of him and his family often. He and others were the pride of my youth.

Sammy was my best friend in Jr high and for several years at Waltrip.  We played baseball, basketball and football together for years before Waltrip and he was quite the competitor.  We would take his Mom's car out for driving adventures to the Drive-In, Minuteman and other undisclosed places.  We would go to Foleys and shop for some new threads so the girls would pay more attention to us.

I'll never forget the call in Feb 1971 as a bunch of Sammy's buddies and I were watching sports at Scotty Sowell's house in Austin.  The phone rang and Scott's mother had the unbelievable news of his death.  It rocked me for months.  I kept in touch with his Mom as she was working with my Mom at Wainwright elementary.  I later befriended his younger brother Johnnie who was the spitting image of Sammy.

My first dog as an adult was a real yapper as a puppy.  Searching for a name I ended up calling her Sammie as a respectful gesture for my good ol' buddy Sammy.  She was a great dog just like her namesake was a great guy.

Sammy will always have a place in my heart. He was such a sweet and crazy character combined! Loved that red hair. It was such a tragedy, then we lost his sister. I know that Ronnie was never the same after Sammy's death. I still picture Sammy in my mind sometimes.
